Iran Opposes Foreign Interference in Region after Armenia- Azerbaijan Deal

Hailing a recent peace treaty between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson expressed Tehran’s fierce opposition to interference from outsiders in the region.
In comments at a press conference in Tehran on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei said the Caucasus region is highly valuable for Iran in terms of political, economic and neighborliness issues.
He stressed that Iran is involved in any developments unfolding in the Caucasus and is in close contact with the Armenian and Azeri officials.
Commenting on a US-brokered agreement on the creation of a corridor that is designed to link the Republic of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan and grant the US a 99-year development lease on the route, Baqaei said the foreign minister of Armenia has given assurances that his country will prevent any measure that may be adverse or worrying for Iran.
While Iran has always welcomed the establishment of connection routes, it has made it clear that they should not contravene the international law or violate the internationally-recognized borders, the spokesman stated. “This is our unchanging policy.”
Baqaei emphasized that acts of interference by the extra-regional powers would be detrimental to regional security and are openly opposed by Iran.
He noted that Iran stays in touch with Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan over the issues that may affect Iran’s interests directly or indirectly./tasnim
