Iran’s Diplomatic Triumph Backed by Russia, China, NAM: Qalibaf
Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf hailed Tehran’s major diplomatic and legal victory as Russia, China, and 120 Non-Aligned Movement states have supported the end of UNSCR 2231 restrictions and rejected Western snapback efforts.
Addressing a Sunday session of the Parliament, Qalibaf said Iran has achieved one of the most significant achievements in the foreign policy arena, which is the result of years of resistance and progress by the Iranian people in the face of oppressive sanctions and pressures.
He described the letter from the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and China to the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council as a symbol of the strategic solidarity of these three major powers, who explicitly declared that the attempts by the three European countries to activate the so-called snapback mechanism are legally invalid.
Qalibaf added that, based on Paragraph 8 of Resolution 2231, all restrictions and obligations under the resolution have expired. He noted that the revocation of previous resolutions continued and that, with the formal recognition of Iran’s right to enrichment, the country’s nuclear file has been removed from the Security Council’s agenda.
Pointing to a recent letter from the permanent representatives of Iran, Russia, and China at the Vienna-based UN offices to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Qalibaf said they emphasized the illegality of any attempt to activate the snapback mechanism and clarified that, with the expiration of Resolution 2231, the IAEA director general’s mandate for verification and monitoring of the JCPOA and Iran’s nuclear activities had ended.
He stressed that the IAEA should adhere to the Board of Governors’ December 2015 resolution rather than follow unilateral Western interpretations.
Those two joint letters represented not only a legal victory for Iran but also evidence of a shift in global power dynamics, with the world order now divided in the implementation of UN resolutions, Qalibaf stated.
As China and Russia —two permanent members of the Security Council— have stood firmly alongside Iran, the era of US and Western unilateralism has come to an end, the Parliament speaker noted.
He said the structure of the international system is showing signs of a new era in which China, Russia, Iran, and 120 Non-Aligned Movement countries have legally ended the misuse of international organizations’ mechanisms and stood against the unlawful imposition of will and coercion by the US and a few European countries./tasnim
