Iran-China relations a choice, not compulsion: Deputy FM
Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh emphasized the enduring, civilizational, and strategic nature of Iran-China relations as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in political, economic, and technological fields.
Speaking at the opening of the Third Iran-China Think Tank Forum on Saturday, Khatibzadeh stated, “On the eve of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the People’s Republic of China, we are embarking on a new phase of cooperation with our Chinese colleagues. Despite global pressures and sanctions, one certainty remains: the friendship between Iran and China.”
He highlighted that, regardless of shifts in the international system or challenges posed by the United States, Iran-China relations remain genuine, historical, and civilizational. The forum aims to promote pragmatic, forward-looking dialogue to facilitate short-term planning while aligning with both countries’ long-term strategies.
Khatibzadeh noted that the leaders of Iran and China have demonstrated strong commitment to advancing bilateral ties even amid a fragile and unstable global environment, shaped by disruptive actions of hegemonic powers. Iran and China, as countries committed to international law as the foundation of global order, have endeavored to maintain and advance their bilateral relations, he said.
He emphasized the significance of aligning initiatives with the Seventh Development Plan of Iran and China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, noting that these frameworks provide an opportunity to translate shared priorities into actionable programs. The discussions focus on practical cooperation in trade, technology, development corridors, tourism, renewable energy, and clean industries, promoting sustainable and mutually beneficial growth.
Khatibzadeh also referred to the 2021 Strategic Cooperation Agreement, noting that despite changes in Iran’s administration, the document remains the cornerstone of bilateral ties. The forum allows think tanks and decision-makers to assess strategies, adapt to environmental changes, and identify mechanisms to implement high-level initiatives more efficiently.
He concluded by stressing that Iran-China relations are a choice, not a compulsion, and represent a multi-layered partnership that can advance the shared interests of both nations and their peoples while navigating the challenges of the changing international order./mehr
