Drafting of Positions Ongoing Ahead of Next Round of Nuclear Talks: Iranian Spokesman
The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said the drafting and preparation of positions for the next round of nuclear negotiations with the US is currently underway.
Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei addressed questions regarding Iran’s proposed text for the upcoming round of negotiations with the US and speculation about the possibility of an interim agreement.
He stated that the details of any negotiation process are discussed in the negotiating room and emphasized that the idea of an interim agreement has no basis. He added that drafting a negotiation text is a joint task.
The spokesperson said Iran is formulating its own views, noting that Tehran’s positions regarding the lifting of the unjust sanctions and nuclear-related issues are clear. He added that Iran is also well informed about the US’ viewpoints and underlined that any negotiation process is a joint undertaking.
According to Baqaei, the parties are currently in the stage of drafting their positions, and Iran hopes to hold another round of talks within the next two to three days.
On the initiative of the parties and the prospect of a win-win agreement, he said that no negotiation aimed at forcing one-sided concessions would lead to results.
Iran is serious and determined in pursuing the diplomatic path because it is confident in the legitimacy of its position, the spokesman stated, adding that Iran will steadfastly continue the process, relying on and confident in the solid foundations of its demands, as long as it feels the talks will lead to results.
Asked about claims that Iran is prolonging the negotiations, Baqaei said such assertions have no basis.
He noted that the negotiation process is closely followed and that Iran has repeatedly stated it is prepared to continue talks for weeks without interruption in order to reach a result.
The spokesman added that holding negotiations every 10 days is not Iran’s preferred option and stressed that talks are useful for Iran only if they lead to results. He stated that reason dictates acting as soon as possible to remove sanctions./tasnim
