Envoy: BRICS plays decisive role in global energy security

Iran’s ambassador to the Russian Federation has stressed the fact that global energy security is largely shaped by countries in the Global South, particularly among BRICS members, and that these nations play a decisive role in this regard.

Addressing a meeting on BRICS’ development which was held on the sidelines of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026) on Saturday, Kazem Jalali elaborated on Iran’s views regarding BRICS’s position in the global energy system.

Geopolitical tensions, disruptions in supply chains, fluctuations in global markets, and increasing demand in emerging economies all indicate that energy security has become one of the main pillars of global stability and development more than ever before, he added.

Energy security does not merely mean access to energy resources, but rather a comprehensive concept that includes supply security, demand security, investment security, technology security, infrastructure security, and financial security, he noted.

Jalali called for developing the International North-South Transport Corridor, transport and logistics infrastructure, port cooperation, and energy network connectivity among BRICS member states.

He went on to say that these measures could help increase the security and sustainability of energy trade at both regional and global levels.

Not only has Iran never attacked any country, but it has always called for peace, stability, and security in the world, and as a BRICS member and a major energy producer, it will play its constructive role in realizing global energy security, the diplomat said./irna
