Vitaly Churkin stated that after the nuclear issue was resolved and following the Joint Comprehensive plan of Action, remained no obstacle for Iran to join the SCO, according to ISNA.

"We consider there in no limitation left for a positive consideration of Iran’s membership application after the resolution of the situation on Iran’s nuclear program and lifting of the UN sanctions," Churkin said following a meeting held by the UN Security Council on Friday.

President Hassan Rouhani has said before that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s members are interested in a permanent membership of Iran, adding Iran’s permanent membership to the organization will benefit both Iran and the organization regarding the current situation in the Middle East region.

The SCO is a political and economic alliance that includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Iran currently has an observer status in the SCO.
