Iranian Egg Exporters Losing Out to Turkey

EghtesadOnline: Negotiations with Afghanistan for the export of Iranian eggs to the neighboring country have failed and Iran’s chances of exporting eggs seem remote even by the end of the Iranian year (March 2018), the head of the board of directors at Tehran’s Union of Producers of Egg-Laying Chicken said.

“Turkish eggs are much cheaper than ours and the Afghans would rather do trade with them than with us,” Nasser Nabipour was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency. According to the official, Iran has exported only 3,000 tons of eggs since the beginning of the current fiscal year (March 21), mainly to Afghanistan. Iran’s egg production stands at about 960,000 tons per year. If rural chicken are also included, the yearly production reaches 1 million. “Iran’s per capita egg consumption is about 10 kilograms per year,” Nabipour said.  “Domestic demand adds up to around 850,000 tons, which means there is a production surplus of around 160,000 tons.” Last year (March 2016-17), Iran exported 40,000 tons of eggs, some 55,000 tons less than in the previous year, according to Financial Tribune.
