Iran weightlifter wins gold, sets world record in 94kg category

EghtesadOnline: Iranian athlete Sohrab Moradi won gold medal of 94 kilogram category in weightlifting competitions at the 2017 Asian Indoor Games by setting a new record in the world.

Ten weightlifters participated in the competitions in Ashgabat of whom Moradi, an Isfahani weightlifter who also won gold medal of Rio Olympics Games, grabbed gold medal by raising world record by one kilo after 18 years, IRNA reported.

Moradi lifted 176, 181 and 185 kilograms in snatch and lifted 220 kilograms in clean and jerk class, winning the record from a Greek weightlifter in the 94 category.

In his third move, he picked up 228 kilogram and lifted it, raising world record by one kilogram.

In the weightlifting category of the global competition in Turkmenistan, an Uzbek won silver while a Chinese came third.

The 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is underway with athletes from 49 countries from Asia and Pacific in attendance in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Iranian squad copmprising of 214 athletes (115 male and 66 female) attended the event.

Iranian athletes participated in twenty fields namely, futsal, table tennis, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Sambo, Kurash, Jujutsu, bowling, billiards, cycling, track-and-field, swimming, weightlifting, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Pahlavani wrestling, Alysh, basketball, taekwondo, horse-riding and chess.
