AEOI Chief in Vienna for Nuclear Confab
EghtesadOnline: The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran arrived in Vienna on Sunday to attend an international nuclear security conference.
Ali Akbar Salehi is to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of the Third International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS 2020): Sustaining and Strengthening Efforts, slated for Feb. 10-14, Financial Tribune reported.
Organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the conference aims to help exchange views and foster international cooperation on nuclear security, ISNA reported.
Salehi also plans to meet IAEA’s newly appointed Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss Tehran’s collaboration with the UN nuclear agency. Iran’s nuclear chief is accompanied by Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesperson for AEOI.
One of the main themes of the four-day conference is the impact of emerging technologies and computer security on nuclear activities. Concerns over the threat of cyberattacks on nuclear facilities have been on the rise in recent years.
On the sidelines of the ministerial-level conference, Salehi will also meet foreign ministers and senior officials from around the globe present at the event.
IAEA’s previous conference was attended by 47 government ministers and 29 intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
The organization’s earlier conferences were held in 2016 and 2013.
Participants will also formulate policies on further enhancing IAEA’s role in the promotion of nuclear security, reaffirm support for IAEA’s coordinating role in the field of nuclear security and review international approaches to nuclear activities, according to IAEA’s website.
The conference will help inform IAEA’s 2022-25 Nuclear Security Plan, which is mapped out based on the priorities of member states.
