EU unlikely to support US effort to re-impose sanctions on Iran: Analyst
EghtesadOnline: Kevin Barrett, an author and political commentator said dismantling the nuclear agreement by the U.S. government would cause complicated problems for the country.
In an exclusive interview with Iranian Students’ News Agency, Barrett added it is less probable that the European Union and other world leaders would support U.S. if it aims to blow up the Iran deal and impose more sanctions on the country.
Concerning the U.S. presidential election and his treatment with nuclear deal, underlined, “I think it is entirely possible that Trump will rip up the Iran deal. He is surrounded by hard-line Zionists who opposed the deal and would like to scuttle it.”
He stated that it would be difficult for him to backtrack on all of his campaign promise, some of which were even more outlandish than this one.
“So in order to satisfy his backers, and the extremists who will dominate the new Republican congress, he may very well abrogate the treaty, “Barrette underscored.
He opined, “This does not mean that he wants war with Iran. But if he gives Netanyahu a free hand, which seems likely, the result could be more conflict even as the Syrian war eases.”
Regarding the EU reaction on the issue, the political commentator said the EU and the rest of the world are unlikely to go along with any American effort to re-impose sanctions.
“So the US would be shooting itself in the foot if it abrogates the treaty unilaterally and imposes sanctions on US companies, “he reiterated.
He went on to say that other nations would likely seek to evade the sanctions and profit from the opportunities that the US has lost, adding this prospect could persuade the US administration, especially under self-styled “businessman” Trump, to change its position and uphold the treaty. “It is still too soon to know which way this decision will go.”
Referring to Trump’s foreign policy, Barrette said Trump is surrounded by extremists, including Rudy Giuliani, Mike Pence, his Zionist son-in-law Jared Kushner, and others.
“Netanyahu is celebrating Trump’s victory and ramping up the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, banning the call to prayer, and preparing a new round of provocations. So I would expect the Trump Administration to be an extremist in its support for Zionism, “Political analyst underlined.
