News ID: 781873

A report published by the CERTCC details the attack by cybercriminals. Since Jan. 30, a message titled “Telegram Voice & Video Call Service” was sent to users that would guide them to a phishing website. Phishing is a fraudulent practice when cyber criminals, purporting to be from reputable companies, attempt to trick someone into giving information over the Internet or provide access to an electronic device. The website encouraged users to download a fake version of Telegram messaging app “with more options and access to Telegram’s voice and video call services”. After installation, the fake app would give hackers access to the users’ contact list, reported Iran CERTCC on its website. Users are advised not to install any unconfirmed applications and to get the latest updates from valid app stores to avoid exploitation. Telegram is the most popular messaging application in Iran with 40 million users. The company launched its voice calling feature in April 2017, however the services was blocked in Iran since May, according to Financial Tribune.
