Foreign transit of goods via Iran up 20% in 8-month period
The president of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) said the volume of foreign goods transited through Iran registered a 20% hike in the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year.
Speaking in a meeting with Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Umberto de Pretto, Mohammad Rezvanifar emphasized the need for cooperating in the development of mixed transportation from the southern ports of the Persian Gulf especially Chabahar Port and Bandar Abbas.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration is ready to cooperate with the union for providing the necessary training services to the neighboring states, including Iraq and Afghanistan, in the field of International Road Transport (TIR) aimed at the development of transit activities, he added.
Rezvanifar also pointed to the measures taken in line with facilitating and developing transit via Iran and reiterated that 11 million tons of foreign goods were transited through Iranian land from March 21 to November 22, 2023, registering a 20 percent hike compared to the same period last year.
During the meeting, the secretary general of the IRU expressed hope that foreign transit of goods through Iran’s territory will increase to 40 million tons within the next five years.
The International East-West Transport Corridor will be improved through the Iranian territory, Umberto de Pretto underlined.
Iran is ranked first in the world among member states of the TIR Carnet Convention, he added.
Tir Carnet is a customs document that is issued in the country of origin for the international transit of goods within the framework of the TIR Carnet Convention. / MEHR
