Turkish Army Orders Troops Stationed in Iraq to Withdraw Immediately

EghtesadOnline: Turkey's army has ordered the country's troops stationed in neighboring Iraq to withdraw immediately from that country and return to garrisons in Turkey, media reports said.

News ID: 735207

The Turkish army's decision came in the wake of the failed military coup in Turkey, the Arabic-language media outlets reported.

The Turkish army had sent hundreds of its troops to a military base in Northern Iraq on the pretext of training Kurdish forces to fight the ISIL terrorist group.

Following dispatch of Turkish force to Northern Iraq, the Iraqi government and people voiced their opposition.

The Iraqi government also filed a complaint at the United Nations against the Turkish government.

Turkey faces the challenge of picking up the pieces after their democracy came under siege by a faction of military forces who sought to end the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan citing the leader's drift away from the country's long-held secularist values.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim have separately appeared on television, declaring that the coup attempt is over and that they continue to be in charge.

A failed military coup has left scores dead and over a thousand people wounded throughout Turkey following a violent attempt to overthrow the government by the country's military.

The death toll has risen to 90 people following a military coup attempt in Turkey with some 1,154 wounded, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The number of arrested military personnel has also risen to 1,563 people.
