Astana talks on peace in Syria very positive: Velayati

EghtesadOnline: Head of the Strategic Center of Iran’s Expediency Council says recent Astana talks aimed at resolving the crisis in Syria, was one of the most positive negotiations ever held over the situation in the country.

Ali Akbar Velayati made the remarks on Saturday speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with Markus Eder State Secretary at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office.

Velayati called the Astana talks, one of the most positive meetings on Syria crisis and noted that Iran, Russia and Turkey aim at ending terrorism and restoring authority of the Syrian government over the whole territory, while they want to prevent disintegration of the country, according to IRNA.

All the proposals offered in the Astana talks, though based on goodwill, tend to be preliminary, he said.

“Only after being acknowledged by the Syrian government and people, the proposals are expected to take effect,” Velayati said.

Iran and Russia will continue defending the government and people of Syria, the country’s territorial integrity and independence, said the head of the Strategic Center of the Expediency Council.

He called his talks with the state secretary at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office as constructive, noting that Berlin is also against disintegration of regional nations.

Resolution of regional problems has no military solution, Velayati said.

He noted that Iran would continue cooperation with Germany on implementation of the nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, known also as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Germany is a reliable partner for Iran in Europe, Velayati added.
