Mogherini congratulates Rouhani on Iran election win

EghtesadOnline: The EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, on Saturday congratulated Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is on course for a second term in office, Politico reported.

On Twitter, she said Iranians “passionately” took part in “political life in their country. I congratulate President Hassan Rouhani for strong mandate received.”

Preliminary vote tallies have Rouhani ahead with 22.8 million votes, out of 38.9 million counted so far. More than 40 million Iranians are believed to have voted, putting turnout at over 70 percent. His nearest challenger is Ebrahim Raisi, with 15.5 million votes, AP reported.

According to ISNA, Mogherini said the EU was ready to continue working with Rouhani to fully implement the joint comprehensive plan of action, the 2015 deal that reduced Iran’s uranium stockpile.

Mogherini also tweeted that bilateral engagement and regional peace are priorities for the EU’s relationship with the Iranian government as well as “meet expectations of all people in Iran”.

Rouhani has been president of Iran since 2013.
