Talking to IRNA, she added that this is Rouhani's first trip to the country since he took the office as president in 2013.

Given the regional situation and international developments, she noted, the trip is of high importance.

During his two-day stay here, Rouhani is scheduled to meet with a group of Malaysian elites, thinkers and media analysts.

According to the Ambassador, the Iranian President will also hold talks with the country's prime minister and parliament speaker.

Rouhani will also address Iranian expatriates involved in scientific, academic and commercial areas, she said.

Diplomatic shuttles between the two countries' high-ranking officials are indicative of their resolve to further bolster bilateral ties in all fields, she said, highlighting Iran and Malaysia's interest in promoting mutual cooperation.

After the implementation of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran has prepared many opportunities for starting a new chapter in foreign relations and South-East Asian nations which are ardent for further collaboration with Iran, Afkham said.

The envoy further noted that Iran's foreign policy attaches great significance to Asian states, South-East Asian nation in particular, and is determined to consolidate strategic ties with the region.

'Iran and Malaysia are opposed to terrorism and extremism and have common viewpoints regarding various regional and international issues,' she said.

Thanks to Iran and Malaysia's numerous historical, literary and religious commonalities, Afkham hoped that bilateral ties will further improve.
