Steel Heavyweights Register Growth in Upstream Output

EghtesadOnline: The upstream steel industry registered growth in the production of iron ore concentrate, pellet and direct reduced iron during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year (March 2020-February 2021), latest data released by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization show.

The IMIDRO report takes into account the output of major producers, hence the overall production should be higher than the figures quoted here.

 

 

Iron Ore Concentrate

A total of 46.1 million tons of iron ore concentrate were produced during the first 11 months of the fiscal year, marking a 6% increase compared with the same period of last year. 

According to IMIDRO, Golgohar Mining and Industrial Complex had the highest share of the output with 15.48 million tons that is 4% higher than the same period of the last year. 

Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Complex came next with 10.5 million tons (up 18% YOY), followed by Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company with 5.83 million tons (up 22% YOY) and Goharzamin Iron Ore Company with 4.09 million tons (down 2% YoY) of output during the 11-month period.

Other major producers included Iran Central Iron Ore Company with 3.85 million tons (down 11% YOY), National Development Company with 2.30 million tons (up 4% YOY) and Opal Parsian Sangan with 2.18 million tons (down 22% YOY).

Sabanour Mining and Industrial Development Company recorded the highest increase in iron ore concentrate production during the first 11 months of the fiscal year. The company’s output increased by 29% to 1.34 million tons. 

Iron ore concentrate output during the 11th Iranian month (Jan. 20–Feb. 19) amounted to 4.535 million tons to register a 7% growth compared with the same period of last year. 

Golgohar Mining and Industrial Complex was the leading producer during the month, solely accounting for 1.6 million tons of the monthly output. Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Complex came after with 977,722 tons of monthly output.

Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company registered the highest increase of 21% during the month under review.

 

 

Pellet

Pellet output of major steel mills amounted to 42.38 million tons during the 11-month period, posting a growth of 12% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Golgohar was again the largest producer with 11.61 million tons (up 4% YOY), followed by Mobarakeh Steel Company with 6.88 million tons (up 10% YOY), MIDHCO with 5.76 million (up 14% YOY), Khouzestan Steel Company with 5.3 million tons (down 2%) and Chadormalu with 3.43 million tons (up 4% YOY).

Other major pellet producers included Opal Parsian Sangan with 3 million tons (up 4% YOY), Sangan Mineral and Industrial Company with 2.89 million tons (up 39% YOY) and Khorasan Steel Company with 1.43 million tons (up 3% YOY). 

Sangan Mineral and Industrial Company registered the largest growth of 39% in pellet output during the above-mentioned period, compared with the same period of last year. 

Pellet production witnessed a 9% year-on-year increase during the 11th month of the Iranian year to 3.86 million tons, IMIDRO’s data show. 

Khorasan Steel Company registered the highest rise of 15% in output during the month to Feb. 19. 

  

 

Direct-Reduced Iron 

Production of direct-reduced iron stood at 27.84 million tons during the first 11 months of the fiscal year, up 10% YOY. 

Mobarakeh accounted for the largest share of the output with 6.06 million tons (up 13% YOY), followed by KSC with 3.75 million tons (up 9% YOY), Golgohar Complex with 2.74 million tons, South Kaveh Steel Company with 1.55 million tons (up 13% YOY), Hormozgan Steel Company with 1.49 tons (up 8% YOY), Chadormalu Steel Company with 1.45 million tons (up 1% YOY) and Saba Steel Complex with 1.26 million tons (up 12% YOY).

As per the figures, Saba Steel Company recorded the highest growth in DRI output in the said period, with a 117% increase compared with the same period of last year. 

DRI production reached 2.28 million tons during the month to Feb. 19, indicating a 31% growth YOY.

Mobarakeh Steel Company produced 288,590 tons of DRI to lead the market during the 11th month of the fiscal year while its monthly output registered a 63% growth, year-on-year.
