Iran opens third infill well to raise gas output in South Pars

Iran has opened another infill well in the South Pars gas field amid efforts to increase production from the field to respond to a growing demand for energy in the country.

CEO of the state-run Pars Oil & Gas Company Touraj Dehghani said on Monday that the new infill well had become operational in Phase 19 of South Pars, the world’s largest gas field, which straddles the maritime border between the country and Qatar in the Persian Gulf.

Dehghani said the new well will have a production capacity of 1.6 million cubic meters (mcm) (56.5 million cubic feet) per day.

The so-called infill drilling is the addition of wells in a hydrocarbon field to decrease well spacing and accelerate the recovery of oil and gas from reservoirs.

Iran has introduced a project to drill a total of 35 infill wells in South Pars. That comes in addition to a pressure-boosting project in South Pars, where the Iranian Oil Ministry has awarded some $17 billion worth of contracts to increase production from existing wells in the field.

The projects are aimed at boosting the supply of natural gas to Iranian industries and power plants.

Iranian contractors launched the first infill well in South Pars in early March before another well came on line in June.

Dehghani said on Monday that the three infill wells opened until now had increased gas production from the field by 5.1 mcm per day.

South Pars is currently responsible for more than 70% of Iran’s total gas production with an output of nearly 720 million mcm per day, which is higher than what Qatar is extracting from its section of the reservoir./isna
