US Biggest Violator of UN Charter: Iranian Spokesman

Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei denounced the US and a number of its allies as the biggest violators of the United Nations Charter, criticizing their unilateral policies and disregard for international law.

Addressing a ceremony held in Tehran on Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding, Baqaei said the US and some of its allies have repeatedly violated the UN Charter and its fundamental principles.

He said the gathering was held to honor the efforts of the United Nations while also addressing the current abnormal global situation — a trend that threatens to undermine all human achievements.

Baqaei added that the UN is not only an institution for promoting peace, development, and welfare among nations, but also a symbol of the lessons drawn from humanity’s collective suffering.

The Iranian spokesman stressed that respect for the rights of nations, as a fundamental principle, requires rejecting all forms of foreign interference in the internal affairs of countries. He said the goals of the UN Charter have been repeatedly violated and misused by those who remain trapped in illusions of superiority, noting that the world is still haunted by endless wars in which human dignity continues to be sacrificed to political interests.

The violations of law and human rights have consistently originated from powerful actors that have replaced international law with their own fabricated order, using unilateralism as a means of imposing their will, Baqaei stated.

The spokesman underlined that the principles of the UN Charter, including the prohibition on the use of force, have never been under such threat from the very powers that hold seats on the Security Council.

Decrying the US and some of its allies as the biggest violators of the UN Charter, he referred to developments in Palestine, saying that in the past two years, as genocide continues there, the Israeli regime has carried out attacks on regional countries with the support and complicity of certain states and powers, enjoying impunity for its actions.

Baqaei also condemned the US’ threats in the Caribbean region, saying such behavior is unacceptable.

He added that Iran has always been a steadfast supporter of peace and justice. Recalling that both world wars began in the West but engulfed the entire globe, including Iran, Baqaei said this history has made Tehran particularly committed to peace.

Over the past eight decades, he noted, despite bias and double standards in the Security Council, Iran has acted as a responsible member of the international community.

Unlike others, Iran has never torn up the UN Charter, never dismissed the UN as useless, and never labeled the UN secretary-general as a persona non grata, he concluded./tasnim
