Leader Pardons, Commutes Sentences of over 2,100 Convicts on Revolution Anniv.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution and the Eids of the months of Sha'ban, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 2,100 convicts.

News ID: 2002711

Ayatollah Khamenei on Tuesday agreed to pardon or reduce the sentences of 2,108 prisoners, including those found guilty in courts of common pleas and Islamic Revolution tribunals, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

The Leader’s decision came in response to a letter from Iran's Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei regarding prisoners found eligible for receiving the clemency by the relevant judicial authority.

Article 110 of Iran’s Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of inmates upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed smuggling of narcotics, arms trafficking, kidnapping, acid attacks, rape, armed robbery, bribery, embezzlement, counterfeit money forgery, money laundering, disruption of economy, smuggling of alcoholic drinks, and organized smuggling of commodities./tasnim
