Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mirjana Spoljaric Egger held a meeting in Geneva on Monday, as the top Iranian diplomat has traveled to Switzerland for diplomatic consultations and to take part in nuclear negotiations with the US.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed developments related to international humanitarian law as well as cooperation between Iran and the ICRC.

Emphasizing the necessity for all governments to uphold and safeguard the principles and norms of international humanitarian law, the Iranian foreign minister underscored the responsibility of the global community to confront the ongoing gross violations of humanitarian law in the West Asia region by the Zionist regime.

Referring to the grave breaches of humanitarian law and the killing of Iranian citizens during the military aggression of the Zionist regime and the US against Iran in June 2025, as well as the targeting of civilian sites and the country’s civilian infrastructure, Araqchi highlighted the responsibility of the United Nations and relevant international bodies, including the ICRC, to adopt an explicit position in this regard.

For her part, the ICRC president recalled the role and specific mandate of the organization within the framework of the principles and rules of international humanitarian law, and stressed the body’s readiness to enhance cooperation with Iran, including through the Iranian Red Crescent Society. She also emphasized the need for all countries to strengthen adherence to the rules of international humanitarian law./tasnim
