Iran strongly condemns US-Saudi strikes on Iraq

Iran has condemned “aggressive attacks” on Iraq by the US and Saudi Arabia, saying the strikes violated Iraq’s sovereignty and the UN Charter and were aimed at expanding conflict in West Asia.

In a statement on Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry denounced the attacks on several locations in Iraq, including facilities belonging to official Iraqi institutions as well as sites serving Arbaeen pilgrims.

The ministry said the strikes constituted a clear violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law. It said the attacks were in line with US and Israeli efforts to widen war and instability across the region.

Iran expressed condolences over Iraqi casualties in the strikes and reaffirmed its “full support and solidarity” with the Iraqi government and people.

The ministry also held the United States and its regional allies responsible for the “dangerous consequences” of the attacks, describing the strikes as criminal, inhumane and provocative.

The US and Saudi forces carried out strikes early on Wednesday targeting positions of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). The PMF said at least 20 people were killed and 32 wounded in the attacks./irna
