US Emergency Oil Reserves Hit Lowest Record Since Reagan Era

The volume of crude oil in the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) fell last week to its lowest level since 1983, as the Trump administration continues to draw down emergency oil to minimize economic damages stemming from the war against Iran.

Federal data released on Monday showed that US officials released another 8.9 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve just last week.

With this latest release, the US emergency oil stockpiles stand at 340.3 million barrels, surpassing the previous record low recorded in July 2023 during Joe Biden's presidency following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. The last time the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve was lower than its current level was in July 1983, when the Reagan administration was initially filling the reserve and the United States possessed a significantly smaller economy.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve has emerged as a key tool utilized by Trump administration officials to cushion consumers, businesses, and the broader economy from the impact of surging energy prices.

Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, stated: "The release of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, combined with coordinated releases by other governments and a reduction in exports from China, has so far prevented an apocalyptic scenario of $150-a-barrel oil."

However, successive conflicts have eroded a vast portion of the emergency reserves. Since the outbreak of the war against Iran in late February, the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has plummeted by 75 million barrels, representing an 18% decline.

When US President Donald Trump launched his third campaign for the White House in 2022, he fiercely criticized Joe Biden for draining the SPR ahead of that year's midterm elections. Yet, Trump administration officials are now drawing down the strategic reserves at an even faster pace ahead of this year's midterm elections. At current levels, the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve is slightly less than half full.

Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, warned last week that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve must maintain a certain operational threshold. In an interview with CNN's Phil Mattingly on "The Lead," Sommers stated: "We are flashing a warning light right now. We have reached levels that have become deeply concerning."

Lipow suggested that the drawdown of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve might slow down once the Trump administration completes the 172-million-barrel release it committed to in March. While the emergency oil released since the start of the war against Iran must eventually be replenished, this restocking will not happen in time for the peak of the hurricane season.

According to the CNN report, Lipow concluded: "If we were to have a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico that shuts down production for a few weeks, that cushion is simply no longer there."/isna
