RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2018 Event in Kish Island

EghtesadOnline: Iran is hosting the second edition of the annual international robotics competition RoboCup Asia-Pacific (RCAP) 2018 in Kish Island off the Persian Gulf.

Organized by Islamic Azad University, the six-day event that started on Dec. 5 at Kish International Exhibitions Center has brought together 220 teams from 14 countries, namely Russia, Australia, Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey, Afghanistan, and UAE, IRNA reported.

According to Iran’s National RoboCup Committee chairman, Morteza Mosakhani, teams will compete in various categories including, rescue and first aid robots, humanoid robots, football player robots, robot servants, and industrial robots. Entry to the event is free. 

RCAP will conclude with an International Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Symposium on Monday. Director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory of Japan’s Osaka University Hiroshi Ishiguro will present his latest works and findings at the symposium, Financial Tribune reported.

RoboCup Asia Pacific is backed by RoboCup Federation based in Singapore.

The competition is an attempt to help foster artificial intelligence and intelligent robotics research. According to the RoboCup Federation, the ultimate goal of the organization is that "by 2050, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win a soccer game, complying with the official FIFA rules, against the winner of the most recent World Cup of Human Soccer."

Iran is a member of the RoboCup Asia Pacific executive committee since 2016.
