Hossein Cheraghi added that the port currently has one berth for handling 600,000 tons of cargo.
Constructions are underway to add three new berths to the port, which is a key part of the major transit route known as the International North-South Transport Corridor, IRNA reported.
The INSTC is a multimodal transport route aimed at connecting India to Europe, Russia and Central Asia through Iran and Azerbaijan, according to Financial Tribune.
According to the official, the construction of Astara’s second berth, which requires more than $2.8 million, is scheduled to be completed by late August.
Cheraghi noted that upon the completion of the second berth, the port’s capacity will reach 1 million tons.
