First orthopedic hypnosurgery in Mashad

EghtesadOnline: Mashad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS) announced that the first orthopedic hypnosurgery in Iran was performed in Imam Reza Hospital in Mashad on a 32-year old man’s hand.

News ID: 776592

Mahdi Fat’hi, an associate professor at MUMS, said that four plaques were removed from the metacarpal bones (long bones in the palm) with the use of hypnosis and without general or local anesthesia, IRNA reported.

Fat’hi said that hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving distraction through mental images and that the reactions caused by the distraction result in the patient’s not feeling pain.

He added that the surgery was performed under standard monitoring, such as consciousness monitoring by Bispectral index (BIS).

Hypnosis is not a replacement for anesthesia. However, in some cases, between the age of four and midlife, in which anesthetics can’t be used, hypnosis can be an alternative, said the anesthesiologist.

He added this technique is being taught to anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, and other related experts at universities all over the world.

Mohammad Hassani, M.D., associate professor of orthopedics at MUMS expressed his satisfaction with the operation and said that all three painful phases of operation, i.e. incision, plaque separation, and suturing, were done without any pain.
