“The province will be providing food for 27 million people by the deadline,” the head of Khuzestan’s Agricultural Jihad Organization said.

“At present, the province provides wheat and sugar for 11.7 million and 31 million Iranians respectively. Moreover, 38% of the country’s corn and 97% of autumn beetroot are cultivated in Khuzestan,” Keykhosro Changlavayi was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency. More than 8.87 million tons of wheat worth 116 trillion rials ($2.83 billion) have been purchased from local farmers by the government since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21).

The southern Khuzestan Province, with around 1.35 million tons, tops the list of provinces from where the purchases were made, according to Financial Tribune.
