Suburban Trains Undertake 7% of All Trips to Tehran
EghtesadOnline: Out of 800 million suburban trips to the capital city Tehran every year, only 5.7 million (around 7%) are undertaken by suburban trains, according to the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways.
“Though the figure has increased from 700,000 in the fiscal 2013-14 to 5.7 million, it’s still quite insignificant. Given all the benefits suburban rail transportation enjoys for metropolises, Tehran in particular, the IRIR plans to increase this share,” Saeed Rasouli was also quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
Rasouli noted that passenger transportation to Tehran via suburban trains will significantly reduce traffic in the capital city and decrease pollution and road accidents, apart from saving fuel consumption.
