He made the statement in separate meetings with ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Tehran on Wednesday, IRNA reported.

Stressing Iran's principled positions on maintaining "neutrality" and the necessity of "non-intervention of trans-regional powers" in the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, Ashena called for respect for international law by all sides.

He also urged both countries to adhere to the ceasefire to help find a permanent solution to the conflict.

Ashena expressed hope that Iran can also deepen bilateral cooperation based on mutual interests with the two countries.

The ambassadors of Armenia and Azerbaijan also pointed to their countries' historical and cultural ties with Iran, expressing interest in expanding relations with their friendly neighbor.

Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region erupted in late September. The two countries have signed a trilateral ceasefire deal with Russia last week.
