VW’s Golf GTI on Sale in Iran

EghtesadOnline: Volkswagen distributor in Iran, Mammut Khodro, has launched the presale of Golf GTI in the country. In addition to the Golf, Mammut has Tiguan and Passat on offer in Iran.

News ID: 782959

According to an official statement on Mammut Khodro’s website, VW’s Golf is priced at 3 billion rials ($71,400) and car lovers will be charged 1.5 billion rials ($35,700) as a down payment. On the international market, the model comes with a price tag of $26,400.

Furthermore, the company notes that considering the current uncertainties in Iran’s auto market, the vehicles’ prices can be subject to change without prior notice.

Mammut says it will deliver presold Golf GTI hatchbacks in two months’ time. The vehicles can be preordered through Mammut Khodro’s website as of June 12, according to Financial Tribune.

Volatility in foreign exchange market and the possibility of re-imposition of US sanctions against Iran have put Iran’s auto market on a bullish run.

 Spiraling Prices

Following the general hike in car prices in the local market, Mammut has also increased the price of Tiguan by 100 million rials ($2,380) and currently, the model’s price stands at 3.35 billion rials ($79,760).

Mammut launched sales of Tiguan and Passat in January in Tehran with the company’s sales director Mona Nourian announcing, “2,000 units of the two models were presold in less than 24 hours.”

All the three models are outfitted with 2.0-liter engines and Mammut is required to pay a 75% import tariff for bringing them into the country.

VW has had an intermittent presence in Iran. Prior to the imposition of the previous round of sanctions, local automotive company Kerman Motor assembled VW’s hatchback model, the Brazilian-designed Gol.

The assembly lines were shut down in 2010. Later, Mammut imported the New Beetle, Golf and Passat models, whose imports were also halted later. According to sources close to Mammut, Volkswagen has plans to launch assembly lines in Iran.
