Bushehr en Route to Becoming Smart City

EghtesadOnline: A smart city project was launched in Bushehr, the center of a namesake province in southwestern Iran on Tuesday to implement smart urban management strategies in the coastal city to make life easier for the general public.

The project, planned in collaboration with Austria's Institute of Science and Technology, is set to be implemented by Iran's Information Technology Development Center and Bushehr municipal authorities, ANA reported.

The project was launched on the occasion of the national Persian Gulf Day that is annually observed to highlight the significance of one of the world's key water body.

According to ITDC Chief Mohammad Javad Anbiaei, the initial plan for transforming Bushehr into a smart city was prepared by Austrian experts who visited the city to conduct field studies in 2017, Financial Tribune reported.

"By using cutting-edge technology, the project will boost urban management efficiency, optimize consumption of natural resources and boost the flourishing scientific and innovative businesses in the city," Anbiaei said.

Saeed Zarrinfar, a deputy of Bushehr Governorate, called on knowledge-based companies to participate in the project and offer technological solutions to help implement the plan.

The project's working group held a meeting on Thursday, during which tasks were assigned to the municipal authorities and executives involved in the project.

The application of smart solutions and technologies in urban management was first placed on Tehran Municipality’s agenda during the short tenure of the capital's ex-mayor, Mohammad Ali Najafi.

Since then, other metropolises have also started vying for becoming smart cities.

Municipalities believe harnessing smart technologies and Internet of Things can help resolve chronic problems facing metropolises for decades, particularly air pollution and traffic.
