Shooting Breaks out outside Ankara Courthouse, Gunman Detained

EghtesadOnline: A gunman who opened fire outside the Palace of Justice in Ankara, where 27 generals and admirals were being questioned for failed coup attempt, was immediately arrested by Turkish police, initial reports suggest.

According to the reports, the gunman could be a member of the Turkish military who opened fire randomly in front of the court house, Yenisafak reported.

Police units encountered the gunman and detained him within a short pried of time.

A military coup plot was foiled by a comprehensive resistance by the Turkish public, police, local governments and political parties on Friday evening, when a group of military officers claimed to grab power announcing a state of emergency.

Hundreds of thousands of people poured into the streets following President Tayyip Erdogan’s call to gather in main streets and airports to stop the military advancement.

Thousands have been arrested, including top officers from military and judiciary, as thousands more, mainly police and senior government officials, were suspended in the aftermath of the failed coup.
