Gov’t Withdraws Bill on Splitting Cooperatives Ministry

EghtesadOnline: The government has withdrawn the bill on dividing the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare into two ministries of “Social Welfare” and “Labor and Cooperatives” from the consideration of Majlis Social Commission, a member of the commission said on Sunday.

“Today’s vote is indicative of the parliament’s recognition of the need to avoid imposing additional expenses on the government under the current circumstances,” Mehr News Agency also quoted Ahmad Bidgoli as saying.  The decision follows a parliamentary rejection of the two-urgency bill on Sunday to split the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade into “Ministry of Industries and Mining” and “Ministry of Commerce”.  Splitting or merging ministries is not a new thing in the Iranian system of governance, according to Financial Tribune.

Since last year, the government has been flirting with the idea of introducing a structural overhaul of three ministries: splitting the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development into two ministries of “Roads and Transportation” and “Housing and Urban Development”, and the Ministry of Sports and Youth into “Ministry of Sports” and “National Organization of Youth”.
