Iranian hospital achieves global first rank for liver transplant
EghtesadOnline: For the third consecutive year, Namazi Hospital in the city of Shiraz has been distinguished as the global frontrunner for the number of liver transplants carried out in the medical center.
Presently Shiraz is Iran's liver transplant hub and 75 percent of patients from across the country are referred to Namazi Hospital for liver transplants, the public relations office of the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences said on Sunday.
The first successful liver transplant was performed in April 1994 by Doctor Ali Malek-Hosseini and since then Shiraz University of Medical Sciences has continued its activities in this area, reports IRNA.
Since 1994, the university has done 3,310 successful liver transplants.
Meanwhile, the first pancreas transplant was carried out in the university in April 2006 by Doctor Saman Nik-Eqbalian.
So far, 60 cases of pancreas transplant, 100 cases of simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplants and totally 45 cases of intestine and stomach transplants have been performed in the university.
Currently, construction of the largest and most equipped center for organ transplantation in the Middle East is underway.
The Research, Educational and Treatment Center has been named after 'Abu Ali Sina' (Avicenna) the Iranian renowned scientist and philosopher.
Organ transplantation ward of Namazi Hospital in Shiraz is the first and largest center in Iran and the third transplant center in the world after the United States and Spain.
