Purpose of FM’s Trips to Moscow, New York Explained
EghtesadOnline: Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi on Sunday elaborated on the purpose of the Iranian top diplomat's visits to Russia and the United States.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was to leave for Russia on Sunday evening and is expected to head for New York on Jan. 9.
Mousavi said Zarif's visit to Russia is within the framework of regular consultations between the two countries, ISNA reported.
"In this trip, bilateral and regional issues as well as the latest international developments will be discussed between Iranian and Russian officials," Financial Tribune quoted him as saying.
According to Mousavi, Zarif is traveling to New York to attend a United Nations meeting marking the 75th anniversary of its foundation in which the participants will review the UN Charter.
"It is natural for foreign ministers to attend such meetings … It is an opportunity for us to express our views about the UN Charter, the campaign against unilateralism and support for multilateralism," he said, adding that the visit will take place if arrangements, such as obtaining a visa, are completed in time.
