Iran seeks IAEA members' contribution to nuclear power generation

EghtesadOnline: Iran’s Ambassador, permanent envoy and head of the G77 and China Group in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Reza Najafi, called on all members to continue help supporting potential of the members for nuclear power generation.

Addressing the IAEA Board of Governors session on behalf of the G77, Najafi said, “The IAEA should play its pivotal role in advancement of technology and sciences related to peaceful use of nuclear energy, including generation of nuclear power and nuclear fuel cycle.”

According to IRNA, he went on to say that generation of nuclear power is an important choice for the members, accounting for a portion of varying kinds of energy generation, especially in the developing states, whose energy needs are growing. 

Najafi added that nuclear energy generation will help minimize greenhouse gases.

Also referring to guaranteeing nuclear fuel, Najafi said any arrangement for guaranteeing nuclear fuel should be based on the IAEA Charter and the principle of non-discrimination and also the irrevocable right of the member-for peaceful use of nuclear technology, including national nuclear fuel cycle.

The quarterly March session of the IAEA Board of Governors that started as of Monday, will go on until the weekend.

The Group of 77 and China with more than 134 members is the biggest grouping of the developing states, busy in the economic and developmental issues in the UN. Iran was selected in Vienna as head of the Group in 2017.
