UN human rights report 'politically motivated' 'unfair': Spokesman

EghtesadOnline: The new UN human rights report on Iran is an unfair, and politically motivated report based on incorrect preconceptions, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Thursday.

According to IRNA, he made the remarks in reaction to the recent report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran Asma Jahangir.

Iran does not recognize the UN special rapporteur who has been chosen on the basis of a politically motivated resolution, the official added.

He said that the UN Iran human rights report has been prepared under the guidance of very few countries which try to show a gloomy picture of Iran’s human rights situation.

Many of the countries supporting such an approach against Iran have an inhumane record of violation of human rights and this is another proof that discredits the report, Qasemi said.

He noted that the report sources are based on wrong data and incorrect pre-judgments.

The rapporteur has ignored Iran’s human rights progress and has shown a distorted image of human rights situation in Iran, the spokesman said.

He noted that Iran had provided the UN special rapporteur with substantial detailed responses before the official release of report, but she has released the report without considering the Islamic Republic answers.

This action distorts the principle of impartiality of the rapporteur, the official added.

He called appointment of special rapporteur for Iran’s human rights situation unconstructive and noted that Tehran will continue engagement with the new UN rapporteur but expects her not to continue the previous rapporteur’s mistakes.

The double-standard politically motivated approach of UN related human rights institutions will decrease these institutions’ effective role for promotion of human rights in the world, Qasemi said.

He noted that ignoring violation of human rights by certain countries and the terrorist groups supported by them will lead to weakening of human rights in the world.
