Georgian minister calls for expansion of cooperation with Iran

EghtesadOnline: Georgian Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Kakha Kakhishvili said his country is willing to broaden cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran on inmates’ affairs.

In a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Georgia Javad Qavam Shahidi on Thursday, the Georgian minister highlighted improvements done in the country’s prisons and called the need to broaden cooperation between the two countries in this area.

According to IRNA, he also demanded that the status of Georgian nationals in the Iranian prisons to be examined.

Since the rights of Iranian prisoners in Georgia are preserved, the same treatmnt should be givn to Georgian inmates in the Islamic Republic of Iran, he said.

Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador highlighted the significant achievements of Georgia in recent years and urged Georgia to treat well with the Iranian inmates as far as their freedom in observing religious rituals, their access to Iranian TV networks and keeping all Iranian inmates in the same jail are concerned. 

Legal aid, transfer of convicts, extradition of prisoners, and their having a chance to be pardoned by Georgia president were among other issues raised in the meeting between the two sides. 

The Iranian ambassador invited the Georgian minister to visit the Islamic Republic of Iran which was welcomed by him. Georgian minister also invited his Iranian counterpart to visit the country.
