Iran, Afghanistan security interwoven: Top security official

EghtesadOnline: Iran and Afghanistan security are interwoven and inseparable, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Monday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the National Security Adviser of Afghanistan Mohammad Hanif Atmar, according to IRNA.

Countering formation and spread of Takfiri terrorist groups needs cohesive action and cooperation among neighboring countries, the official added.

Shamkhani condemned the recent terrorist explosion in Kabul which resulted injury and death of many people in the war-torn region and offered condolences with the bereaved families of victims, Afghan people and government.

Shamkhani expressed concern about continuation of financial, intelligence and arm support of certain reactionary regimes for Takfiri terrorist groups and noted that this can increase unrest and sectarian and religious violence in the region.

“This can also sabotage the Afghan government's efforts to pursue development and reconstruction of the country,” he added.

Shamkhani pointed to cultural commonalities between Iran and Afghanistan, and said that continuation of consultations and exchange of experience between the two states can help establishment of peace and stability along the common borders and prepare the ground for the two countries’ use of its permanent benefits.

He underlined the need for removal of obstacles in the way of development of ties between Tehran and Kabul, and noted that not making enough effort to boost ties will slow realization of two countries’ political commitments.

The two officials discussed major security developments as well as fighting drug trafficking and terrorism and bilateral cooperation in various economic, security and border fields.
