May and Brexit Future Now in Doubt

EghtesadOnline: The political future of beleaguered UK Prime Minister Theresa May appeared in serious doubt on Monday after SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said she will support the opposition Labour party in its effort to pass a no-confidence motion on May’s rule.

“If Labour, as official opposition, lodges motion of no confidence in this incompetent government tomorrow, [the SNP] will support & we can then work together to give people the chance to stop Brexit in another vote. This shambles can’t go on - so how about it?” Sturgeon wrote on her Twitter account.

May abruptly decided on Monday to pull a parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal, throwing Britain’s plan to leave the European Union up in the air on the eve of the vote after repeated warnings from lawmakers she faced a rout.

While there was no immediate official announcement, the decision to halt the vote set for Tuesday was widely reported and not denied. Two sources told BBC the vote was being pulled, according to Financial Tribune.

The move thrusts the UK’s divorce from the European Union into chaos, with possible options including a disorderly Brexit with no deal, another referendum on EU membership, or a last-minute renegotiation of May’s deal.

May’s own position could face a swift challenge.
