Mayor, ICT Minister Agree to Promote Smart Tehran

EghtesadOnline: At the opening ceremony of the 2nd round of Smart Tehran Congress on Monday, the mayor and ICT minister signed an agreement to join forces and support plans for transforming Tehran into a smart city.

During the event at the iconic Milad Tower, Tehran Mayor Pirouz Hanachi said, “Urban development and transformation of Tehran into a smart city can be possible only through regular collaboration between the public and private sectors.”

Building on the legacy of his predecessor, Mohammad Ali Najafi, the new mayor called for efforts compatible with transparent urban development. Application of smart solutions and IoT technology in urban management were put on the municipality’s agenda during Najafi’s short tenure. The first Smart Tehran Congress was held in 2017 when Najafi was in office.

ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi called for free access to information saying that startups and knowledge-based firms should be provided with all the data gathered by the municipality and the government. In his opinion, an open data approach, in addition to creating transparency, can boost competitiveness, according to Financial Tribune.

Pointing to the International Anti-Corruption Day, which was held on Dec. 9, Chairman of Tehran City Council Mohsen Hashemi said tapping the potential of smart technologies can help improve and increase transparency.

The Smart Tehran Congress will continue on Tuesday with seminars and workshops.
