Iranian Firm to Help Build Dam in Tanzania

EghtesadOnline: An engineering consulting company in Iran won an international tender to help construct a dam and a hydroelectric power plant in Tanzania.

According to Paven, the Energy Ministry news portal, Mahab Ghodss, a leading engineering consultancy company, will provide consulting services for the Egyptian contractor of the project, El Sewedy Electric Company.

The Iranian firm won the bid in a tough competition with foreign rivals like Italy's Electroconsult and Australia's professional services engineering company, SMEC.

"The company has been awarded contracts for infrastructure projects in over 25 countries, including Oman, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, Equatorial Guinea, Qatar, Albania and Germany," Financial Tribune quoted Naser Tarkeshdouz, CEO of the company as saying.

His firm is to provide a wide range of services namely exploratory investigation, laboratory testing, construction supervision and management as well as operation, maintenance, repairs and rehabilitation.

After completing almost 2,000 local and international infrastructure projects, the firm offers engineering services for dams, hydropower plants, water treatment plants, wastewater collection units and recycling plants.

So far Mahab Ghodss has designed and supervised construction of 52 dams in Iran, of which 23 are in operation.

"Mahab Ghodss has played a key role in the development of several dams including Karun III and IV concrete double curvature arch dam and hydropower plant, Karkheh earthfill dam, Gotvand earthfill dam, Salman Farsi concrete gravity dam, Shahid Rajaei concrete double curvature arch dam as well as Marun rockfill dam and hydropower plant," the CEO added.

Tanzania’s budget proposal for the project (also called Stiegler’s Gorge) amounts to $307 million, hydroworld.com reported.

The dam will be built on the Rufiji River, in the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania’s coast and Morogoro regions and more than triple the current installed hydropower capacity of 562 MW.

Construction of the facility will involve building a main dam and appurtenant structures, with expected reservoir length of 100 km and a reservoir area of 1,350 square km. The dam height is about 134 m.
