"Close to 14,000 km of oil and petroleum pipelines are up and running in the country, of which 11,000 km were laid in the last four decades," Iran Petronet news website quoted Jafari-Nasab as saying.
In the absence of expanded pipelines the company would need 60,000 fuel trucks to deliver its products, he said.
IOPTC is a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, according to Financial Tribune.
“Crude oil and byproduct pipelines in Iran on average are 35 years old. However, with rehabilitation and using new coating we can enhance the life of the pipelines,” Jafari-Nasab said.
According to Qasem Arabyar Mohammadi, the company's Tehran office director, IOPTC uses modern ways such as intelligent pigging of pipelines, controlling corrosion of metals by using cathodic protection techniques and regular inspections of installations to enhance safety and reduce accidents.
Referring to the installations in Tehran, Mohammadi said the main pipelines include the 14-inch Ray-Tabriz, 18" Ray-Qazvin- Rasht, 22" Ray–Shahroud and 16" Ray-Sari.
The company is responsible for feeding power plants with diesel in Tehran, Alborz and Gilan provinces during emergencies, especially during gas shortages in winter. The plants are mostly gas-fired.
With the rise in gas production in South Pars Gas Field and increase in gas supplies to industries and power plants, diesel and mazut supply has declined notably.
According to Mohammadi, two oil storage facilities, each with a capacity of 40 million liters, will come on stream soon.
Repair and renovation of pipelines is carried out on a regular basis for sustainable and safe delivery of crude oil and byproducts, he was quoted as saying.
