2,000+ Participants in Sharif University Artificial Intelligence Competition

EghtesadOnline: A competition organized by Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, called Artificial Intelligence Challenge (shortened as AI Challenge 2019) is underway.

Since Feb. 5 programmers have been enlisted for participating in the two-round contest.

For the current round the competition’s technical team has created a game with specific rules. The contesting teams should create an artificially intelligent program which can play the game.

The number of participants in the current round exceeds 2,000 in 745 teams of three each, according to the event website aichallenge.sharif.edu.

Main goals of the event include assessing the skills of contestants in the realm of coding and monitor the ability of teams in the use of AI algorithms, Financial Tribune reported.

Three programming languages, namely Python, C++, and Java can be used. Each team’s work will be surveyed and scored by the jury. Top teams with the highest scores will be eligible for the second and final round.

Among the competitors, 48 top teams will make it to the second round to compete in person during a two-day final slated for March 13-14.

The best three teams will win 70, 50, and 30 million rials of cash prizes ($580, $416, $250).

According to the website, the competition was originally titled "JavaChallenge", but later organizers decided to add support for C++ and Python. Hence the name has been changed.

According to competition rules, the only prerequisite to enter the competition is familiarity with one of the three programming languages. But, knowledge of algorithmic thinking and artificial intelligence is a great asset for the participants.
