Iran Airport Traffic Down 13%

EghtesadOnline: Iran Airports Company registered 34,178 takeoffs and landings during the 11th month of the last Iranian year (Jan. 21-Feb. 19, 2019), which shows a 13% decline compared with the similar period of last year.

More than 4.25 million passengers and 41,741 tons of cargos were transported during the month under review, registering a 12% and 8% year-on-year decline respectively, IAC's latest data published on its website show.

This is while airport traffic, passenger and cargo transportation figures show a 4%, 10% and 13% rise respectively compared with the previous month (Dec. 20, 2018-Jan. 20, 2019), when 32,951 takeoffs and landings were registered. These flights transported 3.88 million passengers and 37,002 tons of cargo. 

The latest IAC report also shows 29,542 takeoffs and landings were made by domestic flights during the one-month period, down 11% compared with the similar period of last year. More than 3.58 million passengers and 28,353 tons of cargo were transported domestically, indicating an 11% and 8% decline respectively YOY, according to Financial Tribune.

On the international front, 4,636 takeoffs and landings were registered, down by 21% YOY. A total of 674,394 passengers and 13,388 tons of cargo were transported to and from foreign destinations, posting a 19% and 9% decrease respectively compared with the corresponding period of last year.

Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the busiest Iranian airport during the one-month period, with 10,519 takeoffs and landings, registering a 9% fall.

Close to 1.3 million passengers as well as around 9.41 tons of cargo were handled at this airport, showing an 8% and 5% fall respectively YOY.

Mashhad International Airport was the second busiest airport with 4,127 takeoffs and landings, indicating a 20% decline. It transported a total of 637,421 million passengers and 6,307 tons of cargos, indicating a 13% and 7% decline respectively year-on-year.

Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 3,027 takeoffs and landings to register a 24% fall, while transporting 472,035 million passengers and nearly 9,526 tons of cargos to be ranked third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports. The figures show a 19% and 9% decline YOY.

Iran Airports Company is an affiliate of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, which manages 54 airports across the country.

 

Norouz Traffic 

 

Airport traffic during the extended Iranian New Year holidays (March 16-April 6) declined by more than 50% for international flights and by 15-20% for domestic flights compared with the similar period of last year, Maqsoud As’adi-Samani, secretary of the Association of Iranian Airlines, announced.

Reza Jafarzadeh, spokesman of Iran Civil Aviation Organization, said a total of 25,546 flights were conducted in Iranian airports during the period, carrying more than 3.17 million passengers, Iribnews.ir reported.

“Imam Khomeini International Airport, with 3,253 flights, was the busiest airport. These flights carried 546,183 passengers. The second busiest airport was Mehrabad, which conducted 2,685 flight carrying around 760 passengers,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development. 

Norouz, the Persian New Year, is the main holiday season in Iran when many families travel to tourist destinations, or meet friends and relatives.
