According to data from the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, motorists bought 2.82 billion liters of gasoline in first fiscal month. Last year same time the volume was 2.7 billion liters, ILNA reported.
The report showed average daily gasoline consumption has increased from 87.1 million liters last year to 91.2 million liters now.
The highest gasoline consumption was registered on April 20 with 114.7 million liters while on April 2 people burnt the least amount of gasoline -- 76 million liters, Financial Tribune reported.
NIOPDC produces an estimated 105 million liters of gasoline per day, of which 79 million is compatible with Euro-5 emission standards.
Although most roads in Iran were affected by the heavy rains in the past four weeks, gasoline sales were still of the upward order.
Energy experts and conservationists say overconsumption is largely due to cheap prices. However, others say consumption would hardly fall even if fuel prices rise. Locally-made cars are notorious for poor mileage and infamous as gas-guzzlers contributing terribly to the air pollution.
