Citizenship Through Iranian Mother Approved

EghtesadOnline: The Iranian Parliament on Monday overwhelmingly passed a bill that grants citizenship rights to children born to an Iranian mother and a foreign father.

Hassan Norouzi told Tasnim News Agency that details of the motion that allows Iranian mothers to hand down citizenship to their children were put to a vote in an open session of parliament on Monday.

He said the bill will be referred to the Guardians Council, a top vetting body, to undergo the legal process to become law.

Lawmakers had approved the general outlines of the bill on Sunday. The law, which is seen as a major breakthrough, would give tens of thousands of children access to social, educational and healthcare services, Financial Tribune reported.

If the decision is approved by the Guardians Council, then the offspring of mixed marriages would be eligible for citizenship, regardless of whether their mother or father is the Iranian national.
