Output from the field is 30,000 from eight wells in the joint oilfield. After work is over to drill 11 more wells at a depth of 4,700 meters, output will rise to 65,000 bpd of oil plus 2.2 million cubic meters of gas, ISNA reported Seyed Vahid Hosseini as saying.
The National Iranian Drilling Company recently completed drilling operations in seven wells in the field, which is said to be one of the most complicated reservoirs to drill due to the sequence of its low - and high-pressure layers and the large number of tubes needed for drilling and lining of wells.
Stretched over 400 square kilometers, Azar Oilfield is shared with the western neighbor Iraq, where it is known as Badra. It is located 20 kilometers from the city of Mehran in Ilam Province in the Anaran exploration block, according to Financial Tribune.
The field’s first exploration well was drilled in 2003, however it was abandoned a year later due to technical issues. A second well was drilled in 2005 when recoverable oil reserves were discovered.
Azar Oilfield holds 2.5 billion barrels of in-place oil. The volume of reserves that can be extracted is estimated at around 400 million barrels. It is one of the six fields owned jointly with Iraq, along with Dehloran, West Paydar, Naft-Shahr, Azadegan and Yadavaran.
The National Iranian Oil Company is developing the field at an estimated cost of $1.6 billion. Production from Azar Oilfield started in 2017 at 15,000 bpd and doubled last year.
