Larijani Reelected Parliament Speaker

EghtesadOnline: Parliamentarians reelected veteran politician and long-serving lawmaker Ali Larijani as Majlis speaker.

Of the 274 lawmakers present in the parliament’s open session on Sunday, 155 voted for Larijani and 105 for the heavyweight reformist contender, Mohammad Reza Aref, IRNA reported.

Mohammad Javad Abtahi, another candidate for the post, won nine votes. And five ballots were invalidated.

Larijani has retained his position as parliament speaker since being first elected to the position in June 2008, according to Financial Tribune.

In the past, he has also served as the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Iran’s culture minister and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, the country’s top security body.

Iran’s Parliament, also known as Majlis, or the Islamic Consultative Assembly, has 290 lawmakers elected from 207 constituencies.
