Iranians Develop Efficient Sewage Treatment Device

EghtesadOnline: Researchers of a domestic knowledge-based company have succeeded in developing an efficient sewage treatment device that purifies up to 99% of wastewater.

Massoumeh Heydarzadeh, a researcher at the company, said the filtration package has the capacity to treat 5,000 cubic meters of water per day, Mehr News Agency reported.

The company is based in Isfahan Province, but its name was not mentioned in the media. 

"The product uses three types of filters that treat sewage by using physical, chemical and biological technologies," Financial Tribune quoted her as saying.

In the first phase, the polluted water passes through a filter with special sand screens that remove larger suspended materials. The second filter includes chemical purifiers such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, citric acid and chlorine dioxide that eliminate organic contaminants through ion exchange.

The final filter, which makes the treatment package unique among other domestic devices, includes screens embedded with microorganisms. 

The process involves taking naturally occurring bacteria and implementing the species in an advanced water filtration process. Rather than cleaning water with chemicals, the biological method pairs reverse osmosis with bacteria that can remove contaminants from the water and instead release oxygen.

The packages can be modified with a variety of other filters and equipment with different functions to be adapted to different operations, climates and input water quality.

Heydarzadeh said the treated water can be used for different kinds of activities, except for drinking, although laboratory tests show that the quality of the treated water is higher than that of water using the prevailing standards.

According to the researcher, the product is becoming popular among industrial units and even households.

"The treatment package has already been installed and used in over 100 research and operational projects through the country. The sewage filtration device is currently used in urban, rural and residential offices, along with recreational places," she added.

Heydarzadeh said the company has started exporting the device to neighboring countries, including Afghanistan and Iraq. The device is efficient enough to enter other Middle East markets, he added.
